In June 1921 the Anderson family was living in a rented four-room wooden house on Princess Street in Chatham, New Brunswick, paying $15 a month. Oscar Anderson, born Karl Oskar Andersson in Sweden, was thirty. He had come to Canada in 1904 and became a naturalized citizen in 1918. His wife, Alma, was twenty, and their daughters, Hilda and Pearl, were six and one.

The census taker recorded Oscar's occupation as "invalid," with "military hospital" written beside it, a sign that he was very likely being cared for as a returned soldier. Alma kept house for the family. Oscar's illness proved serious: he died just four months later, on 26 September 1921, leaving Alma a widow at twenty-two with two young daughters.

By June 1931 Emma had remarried and was raising a large blended family in Chatham, New Brunswick. She and her second husband, George Roy Robinson, owned an eight-room wooden house on Loban Avenue, worth $1,200, and they had a radio. George was forty-four and worked as an engineer for the C.N.R., earning $2,500 a year. Emma, thirty-one, kept the home.

Emma’s three children from her first marriage to Oscar Anderson lived with them: Hilda, sixteen, Pearl, eleven, and Oscar, ten, all in school. The census taker wrote them under their stepfather’s name. George and Emma’s own children were Ronald, eight, Grace, six, Marjorie, five, John, three, who was known as Jack, and Florence, one.

The household also took in a lodger, Gustave Smith, a thirty one year old farm labourer who had been out of work for twenty four weeks of the past year. The census taker spelled the family’s surname “Robertson” throughout.
