By June 1931 Emma had remarried and was raising a large blended family in Chatham, New Brunswick. She and her second husband, George Roy Robinson, owned an eight-room wooden house on Loban Avenue, worth $1,200, and they had a radio. George was forty-four and worked as an engineer for the C.N.R., earning $2,500 a year. Emma, thirty-one, kept the home.

Emma’s three children from her first marriage to Oscar Anderson lived with them: Hilda, sixteen, Pearl, eleven, and Oscar, ten, all in school. The census taker wrote them under their stepfather’s name. George and Emma’s own children were Ronald, eight, Grace, six, Marjorie, five, John, three, who was known as Jack, and Florence, one.

The household also took in a lodger, Gustave Smith, a thirty one year old farm labourer who had been out of work for twenty four weeks of the past year. The census taker spelled the family’s surname “Robertson” throughout.
