Woman dies at 111
Nellie Thompson, who at age 111 was one of Canada’s oldest people, has died.
She died in her sleep Monday at an area nursing home that she settled in at age 100.
Her niece, Wilma Rogers, who visited her once a week for the last 11 years, said the secret of her aunt’s longevity was a mystery to both of them.
“I couldn’t figure it out. She couldn’t figure it out.”
Evelyn Hughston, the home’s administrator, described Thompson as a “dear, quiet little lady.”
She never took medication, said Hughson, adding Thompson’s doctor thought the lack of drugs in her body was the real secret of her longevity.
Born Nellie Hazlitt in Toronto on Oct. 21, 1878, she lived in the city all her life. In 1907, she married postal worker George Thompson. He died in 1951. They had no children.
A funeral was scheduled for today.
