    Mrs. Andrew D. Colgan

After having suffered for nearly five months, Mrs. Andrew D. Colgan of Dundalk, passed away in Owen Sound hospital on Thursday morning, February 8th, 1923. the deceased was in her 38th year and is survived by her husband, five children, father, mother, and four sisters. The funeral took place in Dundalk on Saturday and was very largely attended by friends in country and the village. Rev. George Kendell, pastor of the Presbyterian Church, conducted the service, in the absence of the Anglican clergyman. The deceased was a sister-in-law of the writer and we have been most closely associated with her in her home life. She was a true and faithful wife, a devoted and sacrificing mother, and one who was always ready to perform any service from which good might result. She was an active and faithful member of St. James Anglican Church, and at the time of her death was Secretary of the Women's Guild. She was also Secretary of the Dundalk Branch of the Women's Institute. Many floral tributes placed on the casket gave evidence of the high esteem in which she was held in the community. We have lost a sister whose memory will long be cherished in our home.1

It can hardly be denied that "Ed" Colgan (as he was familarly known) will be sorely missed for many a day. He was a man who took a keen interest in the affairs of the community in which he lived. Although not an old man, as age is measured in these modern days, his interests and activities were widespread and were his concern right up to his last short but fatal illness. While he might be designated editor and publisher, or perhaps, because he was both of these, he gave much thought to public service in civic, state, fraternal and social affairs. In his young manhood he was a member of the Dundalk lacrosse team. In his time he served both Dundalk and Markdale as Chief Magistrate and representative in the County Council. His fraternal affiliations were varied, and his elevation to high office in the Orange, Black Knight, Masonic and Odd Fellow organizations was evidence of the confidence and esteem in which he was held by his brethren in those Orders. While not a charter member of the Markdale Rotary club, his life was an exemplification of the rotary motto, "He Profits most Who Serves Best," and it was largely through his efforts as a member of the Band Committee of the rotary Club that Markdale Band was re-organized.
As a member, then secretary, and finally chairman of the Markdale Cemetery Board, his work in that body has been largely responsible for the fact that Markdale Cemetery is considered by Provincial authorities as a model for small town Cemetery operators.
In political affairs he was always alive to the importance of responsible government. A strong adherent to Conservative Policies, he had filled the offices of Secretary of the Grey-Bruce Association and President of the South Grey Conservative Association. In the Provincial election of 1943 he was the candidate of his party in the South Riding of Grey. Although unsuccessful in this venture, his party attained office and he became it's confidential consultant and made many trips to Queen's Park in the interest of the riding. One thing which will stand out clearly in the memory of the people of this community is that while he was always an enthusiastic politician, he never once used his newspaper to publish any mean or disparaging remarks against an opponent.
Perhaps, particularly among the younger members of the community, he will be best remembered as the re-organizer, trainer and leader of Markdale Citizen's Band. Serving without remuneration, and with very little material assistance in the matter of instruments or personnel, his tireless energy, ability and life-long love for band music succeeded in building up into a worth-while organization a junior group of musicians who will live to bless him for his kindly and considerate efforts in their behalf.
To the family who morn is tendered the sincere and heartfelt sympathy of the people of the community he loved and served.3
